July 18-20, 2008--The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will be in the Cultural Arts Pavilion, Heritage Room of Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration in Indianapolis on July 18-20, 2008. The exhibit hall hours are: Friday, noon-9 pm on July 18; Saturday, 10 am to 10 pm on July 19, and Sunday, noon to 6 pm on July 20. Visitors to the booth will be able to jump start their research of their family by having an IAAGG researcher search through census records online.

Charles Barker, IAAGG President, is coordinating the group's presence at the event. If you are interested in helping with the booth, you may contact him at indplsaagenegroup@yahoo.com. (Note: There will be no membership meeting held.)


August 15-16, 2008--The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will have a booth at Midwestern Roots 2008 Family History and Genealogy Conference at the Indianapolis Marriott East in Indianapolis. The conference is hosted by the Indiana Historical Society and features more than 30 presentations by national and regional experts and covers a range of topics, from sources, methodology and technology to DNA, storytelling, photo preservation, internet linking, and much more. IAAGG is also sponsoring the session by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak titled “Beyond Y-DNA”.

September 20, 2008--The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will be participating in the 4th Annual Central Indiana Family History Conference by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The free event, which has "Linking Lives Long Lost" as its theme, will be held from 9 am to 4 pm at the Indianapolis Stake Center at 900 E. Stop 11 Rd. on the south side of Indianapolis. Charles Barker, IAAGG's current president, will present a session “Beginning Your Research” and Nichelle M. Hayes, former IAAGG president, will present a session on “African American Research”. IAAGG will also have a table display.

October 18, 2008--The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will sponsor a presentation, "GrandMa Reno's Story," by Arthur Thomas (location and time to be announced). Thomas is a noted family historian, author, and genealogist of Springfield, Ohio, and a founder of the African American Genealogy Group of Miami Valley. He has documented his ancestors back more than 260 years and belongs to the following organizations: Clark County Genealogical Society; The Champaign Genealogical Society; The Ohio Genealogical Society, and The Friends of Freedom Society – Ohio Underground Railroad Association.

November 1, 2008--The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will hold its 5th annual African American Genealogy and History Workshop (location to be announced). The workshop will be held from 9 am to 4 pm and will include both beginner's and advanced researcher's tracks again. Back by popular demand, the sessions will be presented by Tim Pinnick and Dr. Deborah Abbott, two nationally recognized genealogists.

December 6, 2008--The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will hold its Annual Holiday Gathering (location and time to be announced). The gathering is a chance for members and guests to come dressed as their ancestors or other historical figures, enjoy a pitch-in with various types of delicious dishes, and participate in games, activities, and more.
